Sudan Council of Churches

Due to the civil war which prevailed in Sudan for 21 years, the Sudan Council of churches (SCC) that was formed in 1966 was unable to reach many in Southern and marginalized areas of Sudan. Thus, its member churches that are in these areas formed the New Sudan Council of Churches (NSCC0 in 1989. Despite operating as separate entities, one body with two faces, in northern and southern Sudan, the two councils worked together with their international partners and through the Sudan Ecumenical Forum for peace and justice in Sudan.

The formation of the Government of National Unity and Government of Southern Sudan in 2005 indelibly marks the commencement of the long journey toward rebuilding and reconstructing the broken lives of the people of Sudan. The churches undertake to accompany the Sudanese people in this period and beyond and affirm to continue with their mission and vision until Sudan reaches its optimum potential.

The New Sudan Council of Churches and Sudan Council of Churches merged into the Sudan Council of Churches as it is today in May 2007. All programs previously run separately by the two councils are now under one administration. The council will be expected to perform the role of facilitation and technical support (accompaniment) at the regional offices to support the churches in ecumenical witness, advocacy/monitoring for human rights, justice, peace and reconciliation, development which hitherto are primary mandates for SCC and its ecumenical mission.
